This was one of the more interesting cakes we have been asked to do so far. As you can see it is a little bit more American in its styling. The client asked for something Rockabilly and something burlesque that even the most discerning pin up girl like Dita Von Teese would like.
So we decided to go all out on this one, the cake looks as if it was covered in fondant, but in fact it is covered in a red velvet texture spray (we prefer not to work with fondant as we believe it ruins the delicate flavour of otherwise premium cake ingredients). The cake featured red, black an white leopard spotted marzipan stars, rockabilly birds, black marzipan pearls, a hand painted marzipan ‘corset’ with rockabilly imagery all over it (such as hotrod flames, diamonds, Calavera skulls and dice). Topped off with a cute little leopard ‘hat’ that features a rose, sugar diamonds and real peacock feathers (normally we are not fans of putting anything inedible on a cake, but this ‘hat’ topper just begged for feathers).
Last but not least the happy birthday sign on the tray is also hand-painted with food colourants on marzipan and features more Calavera skulls, diamonds, hotrod flames and dice. We think it came out pretty cool and the client was pleased too. Probably one of cakes I had the most fun making.
